Periodontist Newark Ohio
While a general dentist provides oral care support that meets the needs of most patients, there are times when specialized treatment from a periodontist is necessary. Periodontists specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing periodontal disease.
While general dentists can support the health of your gums through regular cleanings and/or scaling and root planing procedures, patients who have more advanced gum disease may need the support of a periodontist. Periodontists can provide a wide range of treatments, but specialize in diagnosing and treating gum disease, providing cosmetic support, and placing, maintaining, and repairing dental implants.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are strategically placed titanium posts that provide the same type of functional support as the natural root of a tooth. These implants are placed in the jawbone where the tooth has been lost, and fuses with the jawbone over time. Once fusion is complete, an artificial tooth is connected to the post and the patient has their bright, healthy smile returned.
Gum Disease
Gum disease is an increasingly common issue caused by the growth of bacteria in the mouth. If left untreated, bacteria can cause gums to recede and pockets in the gums to deepen, resulting in additional bacteria gathering, placing the patient at greater risk of developing issues such as tooth loss, diabetes, heart attack, or stroke. If caught early enough, gum disease can typically be reversed with deep cleanings and/or scaling and root planing procedure.
Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry provides comfort, diminishes anxiety, and reduces or eliminates pain for patients during a dental procedure. There are a variety of methods for administering dental sedation (oral, gas, IV) and a range of sedation levels, including, mild, medium, and heavy.
Gum Recession
Gum recession is a common dental problem where the gum tissue surrounding your teeth begin to pull back or wear away, resulting in more of your teeth and roots being exposed. If left untreated, gum recession can result in deepened pockets of the gums, which can cause patients to develop gum disease.
Gum Grafting
Gum grafting is one of the most effective methods for addressing gum recession. There are several different types of gum grafts, but all involve the removal of healthy gum tissue (or use of donor tissue) that is placed over the area where the gums have receded and then sutured in place to return the patient’s gums back to their normal, healthy state.
Crown Lengthening
Patients who have an excessive amount of gum (gummy smile) may benefit from a crown lengthening procedure, which involves removing this excessive overgrowth to create a more balanced ratio of teeth to gums. Crown lengthening can also be performed when there is not an adequate amount of tooth to support a crown or filling.
Gummy Smiles
Patients who have an excessive amount of gum tissue are said to have a “gummy smile”. A gummy smile does not necessarily indicate an underlying health issue, but individuals often feel self-conscious about the imbalanced ratio between their gums and teeth. One of the most common methods for correcting gummy smile is gum contouring, which removes gum tissue using a laser and/or scalpel to create a balanced ratio of gums to teeth.
Gum Surgery
Gum surgery is commonly recommended for patients who have developed advanced gum disease. There are several different types of gum surgery, including crown lengthening, regeneration, pocket reduction, soft tissue graft, gingivectomy, et. al. Which procedure is right for you will be determined by your unique needs.
All-on-4 Dental Implants
All-on-4 Dental Implants are an innovative implant method that provides patients who have lost all or most of their teeth with a permanent correction in as minimally invasive a manner as possible. Unlike traditional implant methods, which typically required six to ten implants to be placed, All-on-4 provides the same level of support using only four strategically placed implant posts.
Full Mouth Dental Implants
Full mouth dental implants are a comprehensive solution for patients missing most or all their teeth, or who need to have all the teeth in one or both their jaws replaced. Although this is a complex procedure that may be performed over a long period of time, full mouth dental implants are the only way to fully restore the feel, function, and appearance of healthy natural teeth.
Laser Gum Surgery & Treatment
Laser gum surgery and treatment is a method of treating periodontal disease with the use of a laser in a manner that is efficient and painless. A unique benefit to using a laser is the accuracy it provides in targeting and removing bacteria without harming surrounding healthy tissue. This also results in a much faster healing process and minimizes discomfort for the patient.
Deep Teeth Cleaning
Deep teeth cleaning and scaling and root planing are performed at regular checkups or for patients who have developed or are prone to developing gum disease. Deep teeth cleanings involve the use of specialized dental instruments that remove plaque and tartar buildup, which cannot be removed using traditional brushing methods.
Implant Supported Dentures
Patients who are unsatisfied with their dentures may be good candidates for implant supported dentures, which are anchored through the placement of titanium posts, to which the implants are snapped into place. Implant supported dentures can either come in the form of a fixed implant or as a removable denture, which can be taken out and cleaned on a nightly basis.
Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal maintenance is a treatment plan designed to meet the specific needs of patients who have developed periodontal disease and prevent this issue from developing in the future. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontal maintenance should be scheduled every six months, however there are many factors that can influence whether maintenance should occur with greater frequency.
Teeth-in-a-Day
Teeth-in-a-Day is an innovative implant method that provides patients who have lost all or most of their teeth with a permanent correction in as minimally invasive a manner as possible. Teeth-in-a-Day provide a permanent solution using only four or six implant posts. In addition to minimizing the number of posts needed (which in turn reduces costs), Teeth-in-a-Day can also be performed without the use of a bone graft.
